Clothes Shopping in the 3 Weeks

Can I buy clothes during the 3 weeks? I have a wedding shortly after Tish’a Be-Av, and definitely won’t have time to buy my dress then.

Shulchan Aruch (OC 551:17) teaches that it’s proper to avoid making a she-hechiyyanu during the three weeks, as one does over a significant new piece of clothing.

Mishna Berura (551:45) adds that one can buy and wear less significant clothes up until Rosh Chodesh Av, and one can also wear and recite she-hechiyyanu on new clothes on Shabbatot of the three weeks until Rosh Chodesh Av.

These rulings would seem to leave room for purchasing significant items of clothing during the three weeks, if they are first worn on Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Av or at any point after the restrictions of the nine days have ended--especially when a purchase is important (as for a mitzva) and there is no other opportunity to make an appropriate purchase. Some communities do maintain more stringent customs, though, something you can clarify with a local halachic authority.
