This is a common custom as well as a good opportunity for the husband to contribute to candle-lighting.

Where does it come from? The Talmud (Shabbat 23b) lists examples of sages who involved themselves in candle-lighting. Rabbi Akiva Eiger, in his comments to mishna 2:6, notes that women are told to be careful about lighting candles, which hints at men preparing them. Finally, Mishna Berura (263:12) writes that it is good for a man to prepare the candles, and specifies (264:28) that a man should light the candles and quickly extinguish them in advance, to make candle-lighting easier.
